Useful winter salad herb, tough and cold resistant. It gained its common name Miner’s Lettuce in the California Gold Rush years. Single leaves turn double and form around a small white flower. Good re-growth after cutting and can be grown successfully in the flower border. Can be sown all year round.
Sowing instructions – Babyleaf production
Sow thinly into containers of damp multipurpose or seed compost and lightly cover seeds with sieved compost. Keep the compost damp but not wet. Seedlings will appear within 3-10 days. Keep weed free and well-watered when established. In cooler weather water less frequently. Harvest the baby leaves when large enough to cut. Use scissors to snip off a few from each plant at 2.5cm (1in) from the base. Avoid damaging the central growing point of the plant and allow the remaining leaves to grow on. Feed with a general purpose feed after cutting to support new leaf growth.
